"What Makes Kelbourne Park School a Special Environment?"

Updated: Nov 19

Luis has had the privilege of attending schools that have really helped him. One of these amazing places was based in the West End of of Glasgow, Scotland called Kelbourne Park. It has been around for more than 100 years and was built with the purpose of supporting children with additional needs.

Environment

Kelbourne Park was an amazing place for him, he really enjoyed his time there and this was obvious for us. In the morning when we mentioned the word school Luis would scream with excitement and  also when he saw the bus arriving to pick him up. On the occasions we had to drop him off he didn't even wait for us to tell him bye he already went about his way to class. There were amazing CDOs (child development officers) and it felt like they all knew every child who attended the school.

Support

There is a Friday coffee chat for parents to attend and really feel part of a community and the school, a place where the discussions are sure to resonate with the parents. All the CDOs (child development officers) make you feel welcome and are available to discuss any concerns, this is being driven from the top and you can sense this from the moment you enter the gates.

Trips

Once a year the black taxis in Glasgow would pick all the children up and their parents, driving them from Glasgow to Troon beach. The parents quite literally felt like royalty or celebrities as the streets lined up with the public waiting to wave them on most of the way. The taxi drivers were amazing on the day, they even prepared bags full of gifts for the children. See below:

Locally to the West End area are many parks and in fact right next the the school was a nice area for the kids to use sensory exploration.

Thank you Kelbourne Park, you will always remain a special place in our hearts and to our family.
