The Power of Unspoken Gratitude

Actions speak a thousand words is the saying... There are times when we look at Luis and can see how grateful he is. Happy to be alive, happy to have a family that care for him, happy to have his school, happy to know he does not need to worry. Even though he is non-verbal just his smile and strong hugs say everything.

We believe we are not the only ones who feel this from their children, family members or friends. Our efforts no matter the size helps them accomplish something they may not always be able to do on their own.

Challenging

There can be no denying that some of these things may feel mundane, tiring or frustrating, you can become an analyst of yours or others circumstances.

My wife and I sometimes say " it's unbelievable what happens to someone when their brain does not function fully" as we watch the simple things Luis is unable to do.

For example selecting something to watch on the tablet even though we have set up the page on the programs he likes, he somehow ends up on something totally different, and is then looking for us to help him change it back. He is not able to feed himself safely, as he would overfill his mouth and choke.

Effect

We can be tired in the morning as Luis is very often ready to go from 5am or earlier, and already bouncing in his bed. However as I mentioned above his smile and attitude is infectious. I have seen Luis make other people in the street, at the shops, or in his school smile as soon as they see him.

I have also seen him upset and frustrated when things are not going as he wants so he also displays other feelings and make those known. That being said his happy moments outweighs the frustrating ones and I think that sums him up and his appreciation in his own unique way.

Grateful

Regardless of the challenges we face both at home and outside one thing Luis reassures us of everyday when he wakes up is his gratitude. The sun can be shinning, it can be raining, it can be freezing, that does not stop him from waking up with a smile and excited to getting out of his bed to go and make the most of it.

It makes me sit back and think if he is that happy in amongst his challenges, surely there is a lesson for me. When I think I am having a tough time (and there are many in life) maybe just maybe I can lessen them with some more gratitude!!!
